Grand Z Casino sportsbook

The only form of online gambling that is legal in Colorado is sports wagering. Starting May 1, 2020, casinos were able to open both retail and online sportsbooks; before that date no online betting of any kind was allowed in the state.

Maverick Gaming and Grand Z have not announced any specific plans regarding online or retail sportsbooks. However, when Maverick purchased Grand Z in 2019, Maverick majority owner Eric Persson referenced sports betting as part of the reason for the acquisition.

Grand Z and Maverick Gaming have not announced exact plans for retail and online sportsbook operations. The organization is set up to offer sports betting, as there are master licenses in place for all three Maverick properties. Based on comments and agreements Maverick has at its Nevada casinos, it’s a safe bet these properties will offer some form of sports betting.

Maverick owns four casinos in Nevada, three of which have sportsbooks: Red Garter Hotel and Casino, Red Lion Hotel and Casino and Wendover Nugget Hotel and Casino. All three are run by William Hill.

William Hill is no stranger to sports betting. The UK-based company is one of the top sports betting and gaming operators in the world. William Hill already has agreements with two Colorado casinos, Isle Casino and Lady Luck, to run their sportsbooks.

Johnny Z Grand Casino

As for Maverick Gaming, it’s not afraid to put substantial money into sports wagering. Majority owner Eric Persson told The Seattle Times it is planning on spending upward of $20 million to $30 million to fight a bill in the state of Washington that would allow sports betting only at tribal casinos in the state.

Grand Z features 684 gaming machines and eight table games but does not have a poker room. The slot and video poker machines range in price from pennies up to $100, while the table games allow players the ability to wager as much as $100 at a time, as well.

Grand Z offers a rewards program, called Club Z, which is free to join. Members of Club Z earn points on their club card while gambling and dining at any of the three casinos. The more they play, the more points they earn, and the better the rewards.

Club Z offers members four levels based on how many points they earn during six-month periods. The first level is Club for members with 4,999 points or fewer. Next up is Flame (5,000-24,999 points), the penultimate level is Nitro (25,000-49,999 points), and lastly, Turbo is for members with 50,000 points or more.

Along with its gaming area, Grand Z Casino features a 119-room hotel, with recently renovated deluxe rooms and suites. Grand Z is not pet-friendly, though service dogs and miniature horses are accepted. Yes, you read that right. The Grand Z Casino website explicitly notes that mini-horses are OK.

There are three restaurants on-site for patrons to choose from.

• Grand Bistro: Fine dining. Offering fresh fish, hand-cut steaks and a mouthwatering dessert menu. The Grand Bistro is only open Thursday-Sunday starting at 5 p.m.
• The Grill: American. Open daily. Specialties include prime rib and its Double Down Breakfast, which is available all day.
• Z Café: Deli, desserts and coffee. Each of the Colorado Maverick properties features its own café, which is ideal for a fast meal. The offerings include sandwiches, pizza, ice cream and Starbucks coffee.

Grand Z Casino history

Of the three Colorado casinos purchased by Maverick Gaming LLC in 2019, Grand Z Casino is the newest.

CC Gaming LLC purchased what was known as Reserve Casino in early 2017. Then, after renovations and upgrades that took more than a year to complete, it reopened in June 2018 under the moniker Grand Z Casino.

As part of the renovations, the hotel rooms were completely revamped, the entire casino was wallpapered, and new LED lighting was added throughout. The hotel features 119 rooms, and there also are 700 covered parking spaces for guests.

The other major upgrade at the time was the addition of what is now known as The Mile High Room, a 300-person entertainment space, which was described at the time of its opening as a “Vegas-style music room.” The Mile High Room regularly hosts live music shows.

In addition to its three Colorado casinos, Maverick also owns properties in several other states. The bulk of Maverick’s casinos are in Washington, where the company owns 19 properties. There are four properties in Nevada: three in Elko and one in Wendover.

It looked as though Maverick was going to acquire both a Louisiana casino and a resort in Lake Tahoe via a deal with Eldorado Resorts. However, in the wake of coronavirus, the company backed out of the deal.

Johnny Z’s Casino Sportsbook

Sports betting became legal at both online and retail sportsbooks as of May 1, 2020. Online sportsbooks are accessible anywhere within the state, both on computers and on mobile devices.

The owner and operator of Johnny Z’s, Maverick Gaming LLC, has not announced its plans for opening both a retail and online sportsbooks. But when Maverick closed on the purchase of Johnny Z’s, Z Casino and Grand Z Casino Hotel from CC Gaming LLC in 2019, it was made clear the company plans on opening sportsbooks in some form in the near future.

When it comes to Johnny Z’s Casino, there have not been any announcements about the specific plans for retail and online sportsbooks, but by looking at its owner and operator Maverick Gaming, we can get some clues about what is likely to happen.

When Maverick purchased Johnny Z’s from CC Gaming LLC, majority owner Eric Perssonsaid:

“This purchase gives Maverick Gaming sports betting in two states and we look forward to adding more jurisdictions in the coming months.”

As for which company Maverick and Johnny Z’s might partner with, William Hill appears most likely. Maverick Gaming owns four Nevada casinos, Gold Country Inn and Casino, Red Garter Hotel and Casino, Red Lion Hotel and Casino and Wendover Nugget Hotel and Casino. William Hill runs the sportsbooks at Red Garter, Red Lion and Wendover, while Gold Country does not have a sportsbook.

As for William Hill, the company is one of the leading gaming companies in United Kingdom.

William Hill already has agreements both with Isle Casino and Lady Luck Casino to operate their sportsbooks.

Johnny Z’s Casino

Johnny Z’s is a slots-only casino and features 330 gaming machines, but no table games or poker rooms in its 21,000-square-foot facility. The minimum and max bet for video poker and slot machine ranges from 1 cent up to $100, the highest amount allowed in Colorado.
